EBay to Ban Google Checkout

In an interesting twist of events, few weeks ago eBay announced that customers won’t be able to use newly launched Google checkout to buy products through auction site eBay. Google checkout is listed among other payment services which include netpay.com, Qchex.com, ePassporte.com and BillPay and they are not permitted on eBay.

The Google is offering the online shoppers store credit cards and address info with Google so they do not have to re-enter the same info each time they buy items from different web sites. When Google launched its service from June, they realized that there services would not complete with PayPal, an online buying service which is allowed by eBay.

EBay is not answering that why it is banning Google checkout but an analyst says about eBay:

“I think there is only one answer that is [eBay] is afraid of the competition, Google checkout could be a threat for PayPal.”

On eBay web pages, it is described that when new payment services arise, it will evaluate them to decide that if they are correct or not. The page also states that some payment services may not be allowed in eBay even if they are appropriate for consumers in other context.

The page also describes that eBay considers a number of factors when determining which payment option will be accepted including financial, privacy and fraud protection, the identity, background and other business interest of the payment service provider and the regulatory status of the provider.
